About HRIS
THE FORMATION OF HRIS
On March 9, 1990 the Heads of a number of Hunter Region Independent Schools met to discuss the possibility of organising activities of mutual benefit and interest. A need for representative sport was identified by Mrs Lorraine Keith, Head of Sport at HVGS. Following consultation with local schools, the inaugural meeting of HRIS Sports Co-ordinators was held on 30 November at Hunter Valley Grammar School.
In 1991, HRIS sporting competitions commenced with events conducted in Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country, Netball, Indoor Cricket, Cross Country, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer and Touch Football.
The founding schools were:
-
Avondale School
-
Belmont Christian School
-
Hunter Valley Grammar School
-
Macquarie College
-

Since 1990, several other schools have joined HRIS and some have departed to join other sporting assocations. Currently there are 16 member schools stretching from Port Macquarie in the north, Tamworth in the west and Erina in the south (see Member Schools for information on current schools).
